Tomato Sauce from Tomato Paste

I doubt if there would be anyone who does not like tomato sauce. In my family, well, we have tomato as well as tomato sauce fanatics! The other day I was wondering why do we always buy loads of tomato sauce and then it gets spoiled (even if we have people who love to eat it), when it can be made at home. So then I got to work and checked out how to make tomato sauce from tomato paste and here is what I found out. Perhaps you too wouldn't mind taking a look!

Tomato Sauce from Tomato Puree

Ingredients
A 28 oz can tomato puree, one 28 oz can crushed tomatoes or tomatoes diced at home, 1 medium onion, 1 bunch of parsley, salt, black pepper powder and half cup olive oil (preferably).

Method

Step 1
Chop the onion in thin slices. If you like the flavor of garlic, you can even substitute the fresh diced garlic for onion. If you want both, mix these two well.

Step 2
Keep onion aside and then move on to parsley. Around cup of chopped parsley will be required. If you do not get regular parsley Italian parsley is fine.

Step 3
Take a saucepan, pour half cup of olive oil and then keeping a medium heat, warm it. Saute the onions in oil till they are slightly brown in color and soft. Take care that onions are not over cooked. Therefore stir frequently to avoid that. This is a very important.

Step 4
After the onion are nicely cooked, add the tomato puree and crushed potatoes and then stir. At this juncture the mixture of onion and the tomato puree may splatter. To prevent that, add some water to the mixture. It will stop the splatter as well as thin the sauce.

Step 5
Since we are using canned tomatoes, (along with tomato puree), you would need to cook this sauce for 5 minutes on medium heat. Add or rather sprinkle salt and pepper according to the quantity of the mixture and your taste. After that, let it cook on simmer for around 30 minutes.

There! You have made your own homemade tomato sauce! For tomato paste recipe, replace the puree with tomato paste. But then, the amount of paste will be lesser than puree, as paste is thicker and has a stronger flavor as compared to puree.

Tomato Sauce from Tomato Juice

Tomato juice is a thinner version of tomato paste and the difference is that it is made from squeezing tomatoes. Initially, it was used as a substitute for orange juice when it was first used. So, you will have to follow the same procedure. The quantity required though, would be more than puree or paste, as its consistency and texture is thinner than either tomato puree or tomato paste.

Tomato Soup from Tomato Paste

Ingredients

Tomato Paste, onion, butter, salt, Pepper, spices - oregano, basil, rosemary and thyme according to your taste. In case you want to make cream of tomato soup, you would need milk, flour and cream.

Method
  • Chop the onion in thin slice and meanwhile melt the butter in a medium skillet.
  • Again as the sauce recipe saute the onion till it gets a nice golden-brown color.
  • Add the flour and keep on stirring constantly then turn the heat to simmer and then let the mixture stay for around 3 to 5 minutes.
  • Now add the tomato paste and stir. Follow that by garnishing with salt and seasoning.
  • After you add the seasoning let the mixture simmer for around 5 minutes more.
That was all! Just remember to cook the paste or the tomato puree well and enjoy it with pasta, noodles, bread, or with salad perhaps!
