Shoyu Chicken Recipe


Shoyu is a type of soy sauce which is one of the main ingredients in Japanese cuisine. Shoyu is used for cooking a variety of dishes including rice, meat, noodles and chicken. However, the popularity of shoyu dishes does not restrict to Japan, rather they have become a favorite among people all around the world. Moreover, due to the presence of Japanese immigrants, shoyu has become one of the popular dishes served in the restaurants as well as road side stalls in Hawaii. What makes the shoyu different from the other soy sauces is the strong, salty flavor that it gives to the dishes. Here are some easy shoyu chicken recipes that you can make.

How to Make Shoyu Chicken?

The best thing about shoyu chicken dish is that there are a variety of ways to make this. Though the shoyu remains the same for each dish, what changes is the way in which the chicken is cooked. For instance, shoyu can be used with chicken that is boiled, baked, fried, grilled, etc. Also, they are very easy to make and will not take much of your time. Here are some recipes that you can try to make at home.

Hawaiian Shoyu Chicken

Ingredients
  • 12 pounds chicken thighs
  • 4 cups soy sauce/shoyu
  • cup Worcestershire sauce
  • 2 cans pineapple rings
  • 4 cloves garlic, crushed
  • 4 ounces white wine
  • teaspoon coarsely ground black pepper
  • 6 cups pineapple juice
  • 3 cups brown sugar
  • 8 ounces vinegar
  • 2 tablespoons ground ginger
  • Chopped green onion tops
  • 4 cans chicken broth
  • teaspoon salt
Preparation

The first step would be to wash the chicken thighs thoroughly. Once you have washed the chicken 2-3 times, drain them completely and set aside. Take brown sugar, salt, ground pepper, ground ginger, green onion tops in a bowl and combine it with soy sauce, Worcestershire sauce, vinegar and white wine. Add pineapple juice, chicken broth, garlic cloves and salt in the bowl and mix till all the ingredients are fully blended. Place the washed chicken in the cooking pot and pour the prepared sauce over it. Cook the shoyu chicken for at least thirty minutes till the chicken becomes tender. Take the pot off the stove and transfer the shoyu chicken in a platter. Garnish the dish with pineapple rings and serve.

Baked Shoyu Chicken

Ingredients
  • 6 chicken breasts or thighs, skinned
  • cup soy sauce
  • cup onion, minced
  • 2 tablespoons corn oil
  • teaspoon minced ginger
  • cup sugar
  • Garlic powder - to taste
Preparation

In a medium-sized mixing bowl, take sugar, ginger and minced onion. Add soy sauce, corn oil and fresh garlic to it and blend till all the ingredients are completely combined and keep it aside. Take a baking dish and line it with an aluminum foil. Place the chicken on the baking dish and pour the sauce that you have prepared, on it. Keep the baking dish in the oven and bake it at the temperature of 325 F, without covering till it is completely done. However, you must remember to turn the chicken at least after every fifteen minutes till it is fully baked.

The best way to serve the shoyu chicken is by keeping it as a side dish for white or brown rice or noodles.
