How Do Infrared Grills Work?


Over the past few years, technology has evolved in such a way that innovative stuff like cooking lights, ignition systems, mini-refrigerators, side burners, etc. have been developed and are used on a large-scale. Well, speaking of which infrared grills as a subject has been pioneered since late 80s. They are known to be the quickest and hottest grilling feature for home chefs to cook and grill special delicacies at highest temperatures. People often have this misconception that infrared grills have some laser technology or invisible rays in the grilling unit which helps to cook food in its best taste. But that is not true. There is a traditional method for generating heat in the grill and that method shall be explained in the upcoming paragraphs.

What are Infrared Grills

All this while we have heard of gas grills and standard charcoal, but with the infrared technology, and the grills created using the same, steaks and beefs have found a better definition for themselves. Using simple elements like natural gas or propane, a slab of ceramic tile is heated at temperatures of about 1600F. Because of the ceramic tile getting so hot, infrared radiation is emitted and helps to cook and grill the food directly. This isn't the case with the charcoal grill or the gas grills. All they seem to do is, simply heat the air around in the unit which is how the food gets heated up and grilled. Infrared grills just have one heat source - the solid ceramic tile, which heats up and distributes heat throughout the unit and the food. This is how the heat is distributed evenly throughout the food for it gets grilled and cooked thoroughly. This also makes the whole cooking process easier to operate and predictable. The food which is grilled has a taste and a texture similar to one that is available at the restaurants and many people simply adore the taste of the delicacies which are cooked in the infrared grills. While, others still cling on to the fact that there is not much difference in the taste of the food which is cooked on the infrared grill or the charcoal grill.

Working of Infrared Grills

Majority of the times the infrared grills are powered by the propane gas or the natural gas. It's the propane flame which heats the infrared element to a very high temperature. Later the radiations are emitted enabling the food to get cooked.

Radiant Heating: The infrared grill expends the most traditional method for cooking food, and that method is called radiant heating. Radiant heating directly heats the solid slab of ceramic tile in the infrared grill, which in turn, leads to infrared heating.

Ceramic Tile: The main key to the whole idea of infrared grilling is the construction of the ceramic tile in the unit. This ceramic tile is a specialized material which on heating emits a radiation worth a temperature of 1000F. The first point of contact for the radiations to touch is the ceramic tile, it is situated right above the heat source. This is how they do not come in contact directly with the food plate. The ceramic tile has tiny holes in its structure, which facilitates the heat to get transferred to the food. For the radiations to emit outward, all that needs to be done is wait for the ceramic tile to get completely hot. Once the tile is hot, with its hot infrared heat, it will bombard the food content and grill it until it is cooked. This way the food tastes much juicier and tastier.
